Tennis stars of the future will have the chance to emulate Britain’s tennis sensation Andy Murray at the Swansea Junior Tennis Championships in August.
Andy Murray participated in the 1997 tournament in Swansea and now, fourteen years later, he is the British number one and is currently ranked fourth in the world.
The tournament, now in its 68th year, is held at Langland Bay between Monday 8th and Saturday 13th August and has become a much awaited event in the sporting calendar for both players and spectators.
Swansea Council is behind the event. Councillor Graham Thomas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Recreation, said “The event is a well established tournament on the summer tennis circuit and remains as popular as ever.
“In addition to providing the perfect opportunity for young tennis players to showcase their talent and compete against other worthy opponents, it also gives spectators the opportunity to see some potential stars of the future in action.”
The tournament attracts competitors from all over the UK, many of whom are accompanied by their family who combine the event with a short break in Swansea Bay.
Young players aged 18 or under are now being invited to enter the tournament. Referee Mary Hunter said “It's an incredible experience for the youngsters taking part,
“I’m looking forward to seeing some exciting tennis being played and hope to see some future tennis stars in the making.”
