Newport’s Debbie Brazier upheld Welsh honour in the Cardiff International Tennis Federation (ITF) Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, reaching the ladies doubles final.
Brazier and doubles partner Val Fisher of Shrewsbury lost 6-3 6-3 to Louise Hunt and Lauren Jones.
Hunt and Jones contested the singles final, where Team GB Paralympian Hunt, from Wanborough, Wiltshire, won 7-5 6-1.
In the men’s singles, 14-year-old Alfie Hewitt of Norwich beat Londoner Paul Stewart 6-2 6-1. Hewitt, ranked no 3 junior in the world, is tipped as a prospect for the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Hewitt also won the men’s doubles, with Josh Steels of Plymouth.
“Debbie did Wales proud in reaching the doubles final,” said tournament organiser, Simon Clarke of Tennis Wales. “The standard of play was exceptionally high, with some world-class performances.”
“The Paralympics introduced wheelchair tennis to a wider audience – showing just how skilful and exciting it is. This was a rare chance to see a high-level tournament in Wales, and a great showcase for a form of tennis which are working hard to encourage.”
