Players from Wales were on good form at the Tennis Foundation’s National Learning Disability Tennis Championships, held in partnership with Special Olympic Great Britain, at Wrexham Tennis Centre.
Welsh successes included:
- Christopher Burke (Coedpoeth, Wrexham) – Gold in men’s div 14 singles;
- Stephen Davies (Bersham, Wrexham) – Gold in men’s div 5 singles, Gold in mixed doubles div 1 with partner Laura Campbell;
- Damon Hughes (Bersham, Wrexham) – Gold in men’s div 7 doubles with partner Mathew Wreglesworth;
- Joshua Kerr (Ammanford) – Gold in men’s Div 1 doubles with partner Shain Lewis;
- Shain Lewis (Builth Wells) – Silver in div 1 men’s singles, Gold in men’s div 1 doubles with partner Joshua Kerr.
Other Welsh players who took part were: James Stidolph (Coedpoeth, Wrexham), Sally Bourne (Cardiff), and Helen Hughes (Bersham, Wrexham).
Peter Drew, chief executive of Tennis Wales, said: “Tennis is a sport for everyone, and the National Learning Disability Championships are a real inspiration.
“The Wrexham Tennis Centre is a superb venue for major events such as this, and it was a bonus that our own players from Wales performed so well.
“There were some very exciting matches, too, including the men’s division 1 singles final, which saw our own Shain Lewis narrowly losing to Special Olympics World Summer Games Gold medallist Oliver Beadle.”

Roedd chwaraewyr o Gymru ar eu gorau ym Mhencampwriaeth Tennis Anabledd Dysgu Genedlaethol y Sefydliad Tennis, a gynhaliwyd mewn partneriaeth â Gemau Olympaidd Arbennig Prydain, yng Nghanolfan Tennis Wrecsam.
Roedd llwyddiannau Cymru’n cynnwys:
- Christopher Burke (Coedpoeth, Wrecsam) – Aur yn senglau’r dynion, adran 14;
- Stephen Davies (Y Bers, Wrecsam) – Aur yn senglau’r dynion, adran 5; Aur yn y dyblau cymysg, adran 1, gyda’i bartner Laura Campbell;
- Damon Hughes (Y Bers, Wrecsam) – Aur yn nyblau’r dynion, adran 7 gyda’i bartner Mathew Wreglesworth;
- Joshua Kerr (Rhydaman) – Aur yn nyblau’r dynion, adran 1, gyda’i bartner Shain Lewis;
- Shain Lewis (Llanfair ym Muallt) – Arian yn senglau’r dynion, adran 1; Aur yn nyblau’r dynion, adran 1, gyda’i bartner Joshua Kerr.

“Cafwyd rhai gornestau cyffrous iawn hefyd, gan gynnwys rownd olaf senglau’r dynion, adran 1, pan gollodd Shain Lewis o Gymru o drwch blewyn i Oliver Beadle, a gipiodd Fedal Aur yn Nhwrnamaint Byd-eang Gemau Olympaidd Arbennig yr Haf.”
