The AEGON Winter County Cup took place from Friday 27th November to Sunday 29th November with the Warwickshire Men traveling up to Sheffield and Warwickshire's Ladies travelling down to Bath. Much like the contrasting geographical locations of the two venues the two Warwickshire squads suffered contrasting fortunes.
Warwickshire Men, Group 2A, Sheffield
After Warwickshire men’s impressive performance during the Summer County Cup and the fielding of a strong squad of player’s confidence was high. The results from the Winter County Cup are as follows:
Day 1: Middlesex v Warwickshire - Middlesex win 7-2
Day 2: Yorkshire v Warwickshire - Yorkshire win 5-4
Day 3: Warwickshire v Essex - Essex win 6-3
Even though Warwickshire's men’s team put in a great effort (especially against Yorkshire) they were unable to avoid relegation to Group 2B. However we are all sure that the team will be able to put this disappointment behind them and bounce straight back to Group 2A next year!
Warwickshire Ladies, Group 1, Bath:
With Warwickshire Women's team place in Group 1 the general consensus around the team was one that this year Warwickshire had a real chance of taking home some silverware. Much like the Men’s team Warwickshire Ladies fielded a strong squad, their results were as follows:
Day 1: Warwickshire v Middlesex - Warwickshire win 6-3
Day 2: Warwickshire v Lancashire - Warwickshire win 5-4
Day 3: Yorkshire v Warwickshire - Yorkshire win 5-2
So after a brilliant performance the Warwickshire Ladies team finish runners up at this year’s AEGON Winter County Cup which is a fantastic achievement! Lets hope that next year they can one better and win the entire competition but for now lets not take anything away from a great performance.
