Day 2 of the AEGON Classic and as I was sitting in gridlock traffic on my way to the Edgbaston Priory Club my mind went back to that old song “rain, rain go away come back another day”. A night of torrential rain had left Birmingham absolutely drenched, I knew deep down that there probably was not going to be much tennis action today on the grass courts.
However there was still very much to look forward to today as it takes more than a spot of rain to keep Warwickshire’s school kids off the Tennis Zones, plus there was also the Warwickshire volunteer lunch to look forward to. Upon arrival at the Edgbaston Priory Club the umbrella’s were out in force and the covers were well and truly buttoned down on all the grass courts. I managed to snap a few shots of the courts with their “rain coats” on in between meeting and greeting schools from as far north as Staffordshire.
With no sign of the rain abating I headed up to the venue (the old police bowling club clubhouse) where Warwickshire was to host the annual volunteer lunch. The volunteer lunch is where Warwickshire’s clubs hard working volunteers are rewarded with a delicious lunch and a complimentary centre court ticket, just another way we like to treat our volunteers here in Warwickshire. The lunch was (as always) a great success with over 50 volunteers braving the weather to come along.
Once the lunch was over I raced down to the courts (camera in hand) where the Mini Green Satellite Challenge was taking place. Low and behold the sun was beaming through the clouds and the covers had been taken off the grass courts ready for action. I managed to get to the courts just in time for the medals presentation where just like in the Mini Orange yesterday the Mini Green event was won by Solihull Arden Tennis Club (congratulations to them).
Sadly though just as I was leaving for the day the rain decided to make a come back so yet again the covers went back on all courts with play being suspended. Hopefully fingures crossed tomorrow will bring brighter skies!
