AEGON Classic Finals Weekend Blog

Well that’s that, after an action packed busy week the AEGON Classic is done and dusted for another year at the Edgbaston Priory Club.  I for one thoroughly enjoyed the entire week as I’m sure everyone who worked at the event and visited did, however before I wrap the blog up I can hear you all asking where the final two days play blogs are.  Well read on and all will be revealed.

Saturday really was a typical beautiful British summer’s day with ice creams and sun tan lotion out in force.  Apparently, there was an important match on later in something called the World Cup but everyone was far to busy looking forward to a full day’s play of tennis to care about that.  Both the two top seeds Na Li and Maria Sharapova were in action today and it would be interesting to see who would make it through to the finals as they both had tough matches against Aravane Rezai and Alison Riske respectively.  Both of the seeds were put through real tests with their matches going the full three set distances however in the end both seeds went through to meet on Sundays final.

However, the real action was going on next to centre court as the Warwickshire LTA Mini Tennis Classic was taking place.  Players form all over Warwickshire have been taking part in the Mini Tennis Classic since January with the top four teams from each age group meeting in the finals at the AEGON Classic.  Some top class junior mini tennis was on show with many spectators being extremely impressed with the standards.  After a great day of mini tennis, the winners were as follows:

Mini Orange Girls:  Edgbaston Priory Club
Mini Orange Boys:  Esporta Warwickshire
Mini Green Girls:  Edgbaston Priory Club
Mini Green Boys:  Sutton Coldfield Tennis Centre

Congratulations to all who played in the event and went home with a Warwickshire LTA Mini Tennis Certificate.

With that, the AEGON Classic 2010 Saturday came to an end in Edgbaston and everyone headed home after a full days play eagerly looking forward to the two top seeds battling it out tomorrow for the Maud Watson Trophy.

Sunday soon rolled around and with the weather looking good I was confident that the finals would be unaffected by rain (well the singles match anyway).  A packed out centre court awaited the start of the singles final with the top two seeds.  On form Maria Sharapova had won 5 of the last 6 times these two players had met on court but with Na Li in impressive form only time would tell.  The match itself was of a great standard however from the off it was Li who was making the most headway and after a mini comeback from Sharapova, Li took the first set 7-5.  It was obvious that Maria was unhappy about a few line calls during the first set and this may have caused her to lose focus as in the second set Li cruised through to take it 6-1 and the Maud Watson Trophy.

Congratulations to both finalists who will hopefully be back next year to take part in the AEGON Classic 2011.  I know I will be!
