Streetly Mens Veterans Finish 6th in Europe

Streetly Mens Veterans over 60 team, representing Great Britain in the European Club Championships for the fourth year, finished in a very creditable 6thth place.

This year’s championships were held at the Bergheim Tennis Centre, just outside Salzburg, Austria.

The Streetly team, captained by Derek Bradshaw was Mick Webb, Will Rogers, Roy Halfpenny and Jeremy Woods.  In the opening match Streetly narrowly lost a tough encounter with the Swiss champions T.C Belvoir  from Zurich 3 -2, with the match being decided in the final rubber.
Streetly battled on, overcoming injuries, to defeat local champions Salzburg 5-0, before losing 3-2 to the other British team Westcliff and eventual European champions T.C. Lese Brun-Weiss 1927 Koln from Germany to finish 6th overall.

Streetly’s result against champions Cologne was their closest match result with Streetly winning both doubles. Mick Webb and Jeremy Woods, playing at number 1 pair had an outstanding result beating the World number 1 O60 player Jorge Camina-Border and his partner in straight sets.

The team and are on course again to qualify for the 2011 European Championships, having reached the finals of the British inter club competition, after beating Hazelwood ( Surrey), West Bridgford
(Nottingham) and Manchester Northern without dropping a rubber. In the final, to be held at Brierley Hill in November they will play either old rivals Westcliff, from Essex, or Hallamshire from Sheffield.

Streetly have also reached the semi finals of the Senior Mixed Doubles Championships and play, the holders, the Leicester club, in early October
