Calling All Schools: Design A Poster For The AEGON Classic 2011

The LTA and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, are inviting all local primary and secondary schools to enter a Design a Poster competition to promote the AEGON Classic as part of a joint schools programme

The AEGON Classic international women’s tennis event is now in its 30th year. Attracting the top female tennis talent in the world, the week-long tournament is held in the intimate surrounds of the Edgbaston Priory Club. Maria Sharapova is a crowd favourite who regularly competes at the event alongside the top Brits as they finalise preparations for the most prestigious Grand Slam of them all, The Championships, Wimbledon. This year the event will run from June 6-12 2011.

To coincide with the tournament, the first ever exhibition to explore lawn tennis as a subject in art will be held at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts over the summer this year. Court on Canvas features a wide variety of paintings, drawings, prints and mixed-media works dating from the 1870s through to the 21st century. The exhibition will be accompanied by a second exhibition that will explore the early history of lawn tennis and its local connections. It will feature artefacts such as early tennis rackets and equipment, women’s tennis outfits through the ages, the original copy of the rules, as written down by Major Gem, and other fascinating memorabilia. Some of this memorabilia will be on site in the Public Marquee during the

A winner from each category will receive four tickets for them and their family to spend the day at the Edgbaston Priory Club to watch both semi-finals on Centre Court on Saturday 11th June, which will also be an artthemed day. The winners will be chosen by Ann Sumner, Director of the Barber Institute.
