This weekend (12th/13th March) was the final round of the 12 Counties Championships, which was held at the Corby Indoor Tennis Centre, Northamptonshire. Usual Championship contenders this season Warwickshire found themselves at the wrong end of the group sitting in the relegation zone so a good performance was required from our U16 boys and girls teams in order for Warwickshire to retain their top flight status.
Up first was the boy’s team, which consisted of Sam Jenkins, Andrew Cooper, Michael Pandya and James Taylor. The boy’s results were as follows:
Nottinghamshire 2 – 2 Warwickshire
Leicestershire 1 – 3 Warwickshire
Yorkshire 3 – 1 Warwickshire
So a solid performance by the boys team who finished 2nd on the day grabbing a vital 3 points for the Warwickshire team moving them out of the relegation zone and into the runners up spot. It was now up to the girl’s team to secure Warwickshire’s Division 1 status however, with Warwickshire fielding a very young and inexperienced team it was going to be a nail-biting finale.
The girls team consisted of Emily Smith, Katie Wainhouse, Charlotte Gorst and Rebecca Bonder. The girls results were as follows:
Nottinghamshire 2 – 2 Warwickshire
Leicestershire 3 – 1 Warwickshire
Yorkshire 4 – 0 Warwickshire
Although the girls all gave 100% during the entire competition, their inexperience unfortunately went against them however, they still managed to secure 1 point for the team effort. This result left Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire tied for 2nd on points however Warwickshire came in 2nd overall after the tournament referee ruled that Warwickshire beat Nottinghamshire in the head-to-head in results over all the age groups and therefore claim 2nd place.
