SwaS Tennis Week 2 (07/05/2011)

With joint table toppers from last week Alcester having no match, reigning champions Stratford-on-Avon took full advantage to pull clear at the top after a 3-1 win away to Moreton-in-Marsh. Evesham move to equal second after they drew 2-2 with Stratford B. Henley picked up their first points of the season as did Pershore in their first match when they also shared a 2-2 draw.

Apart from the final rubber which went to a championship tie-break before Moreton claimed their one and only point, Stratford enjoyed a comfortable win. Tim Page & Simon West (Stratford) beat Brian Lomas & Gary Jackson (Moreton) 6-1, 6-3, and beat Chris Adams and Tim Firth (Moreton) 6-1, 6-0. Callum Bailey & Richard Monk (Stratford) beat Adams & Firth 6-4, 6-4, but lost to Lomas & Jackson 5-7, 6-1, 0-1 (6-10) in a championship tie-break finish.

With Alcester not playing, Evesham moved into joint second place with them after they drew with Stratford at Swans Nest Lane. It was the Evesham top duo of David Hubbard & Simon Wall who won both their rubbers. Nick Harper & Mark Parsons (Stratford B) lost to Hubbard & Wall 4-6, 4-6, but beat John Clarke & Ruth Lynton (Evesham) 6-1, 6-2. Sam Righton & Cesar Toro defeated Clarke & Lynton 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) in a tie-break, but lost to Hubbard and Wall 1-6, 1-6.

In the final Premier Division match honours were even between Henley at home to Pershore who opened their 2011 campaign. Ben Summers & John Turner (Henley) beat Mike Langston & Chris Langston (Pershore) 6-1, 6-2, and beat Paul Higgins & George Ricketts (Pershore) 6-2, 6-1. Phil Silk & Chris Cardwell (Henley) lost to Higgins & Silk 2-6, 2-6, and lost to Langston & Langston 1-6, 6-1, 0-1 (4-10) in a tie-break finish.

Division One first week leaders Chipping Campden were not in action this week and Bidford took advantage to leap over them and top the Division by three points after they enjoyed a straight sets victory over Ardencote Manor 4-0. Shipston-on-Stour move up to second on six points after they were awarded a 4-0 walkover with Littleton unable to raise a team. Under the new penalty introduced at this year's AGM to deter such occurrences Littleton were fined and deducted two points. In the final match at Whitnash Claverdon opened their account but were held to a 2-2 draw by the home side.

Division Two saw clear leaders emerge when Inkberrow defeated Claverdon B 4-0 to go two points clear at the top. Studley A suffered a 3-1 defeat to Snitterfield but won their re-arranged match from last week against sister side Studley B 4-0 to move into second place with 5 points, a point clear of Snitterfield. Littleton B and Stratford C stay mid table with Snitterfield after both won 3-1. Stratford C beat Studley B while Littleton B overcame Ullenhall.

Leaders of Division Three FISSC of Stratford lost 3-1 to Alcester B who with that result join FISSC equal top. A third side Ilmington joined them in top spot after they defeated Shipston B 3-1. Wildmoor Spa were gifted a 4-0 walkover when Harbury failed to raise a team and were fined and had two points deducted. Aston Cantlow played no match this week.

The clash between the two teams topping Division Four, Chipping Campden B and Henley-in-Arden B, resulted in a 2-2 draw which keeps them both at the top. With Inkberrow B having no match HDA Redditch move above them into third due to their 3-1 victory over Moreton-in-Marsh B. Snitterfield B celebrated their first fixture of the season by defeating Chipping Campden C 3-1.

In Division Five joint leaders from week one Alcester C and Pershore B stay top despite sharing a 2-2 draw. Inkberrow C drop to third equal with their conquerors HDA B of Redditch who beat Inkberrow 3-1.
Bidford B are next on four points after drawing 2-2 away to Claverdon C. Henley C join them after they claimed a 4-0 win over bottom side Studley C.
