Widney Sports Tennis League - Week 3 (14/05/2011)

Week 3 of the season for the Widney Sports Tennis League for the South Warwickshire & District saw a change at the top of the League with Alcester riding high. With reigning champions Stratford sitting out a week, their sister side did them no favours when they were unable to raise a team. This gave Alcester the four points on a plate to lead the Premier Division and Stratford A by a point. Stratford B not only lose the match 0-4 but were fined and had two points deducted for their infringement. The same penalty was imposed on Evesham who similarly defaulted to Henley-in-Arden 0-4. This result pushed Henley up to third while Evesham sink to next to bottom of the table, just above bottom placed Stratford B.

One result that was played at Pershore saw the home side overcome Moreton-in-Marsh 3-1. This win lifted Pershore to fourth with Moreton in fifth. The most successful pair were Pershore's Paul Higgins & Mark Rowe who beat Will Hale & Gary Jackson (Moreton) 6-4, 6-2, and Chris Adams & Brian Lomas (Moreton) 6-3, 6-1. Mike Langston & Chris Langston (Pershore) beat Adams & Lomas 6-4, 7-6, but lost to Hale & Jackson 6-4, 6-7, 0-1 (9-11) in the closest of championship tie-break finishes.

In Division One last week's leaders Bidford-on-Avon stay top but were beaten 3-1 by Claverdon who move up to fourth place. Bidford are joined at the top by Shipston-on-Stour who drew 2-2 with third placed Chipping Campden. Whitnash drew 2-2 away to bottom placed Littleton while Ardencote enjoyed a free week.

Division Two saw leaders Inkberrow held to a 2-2 draw by Stratford C who move up to third. Studley took advantage and joined equal top after an excellent 4-0 win over Littleton B. Claverdon B move up two places to fourth and exchange positions with Snitterfield after a good 4-0 victory over them. However, they were forced to two tie-breaks before emerging victors. Finally, Ullenhall moved off the bottom after a 3-1 win over bottom of the table Claverdon B.

Alcester B and FISSC remain on top of Division Three, although Alcester B lead by virtue of their early season win over FISSC. This week Alcester beat Aston Cantlow 3-1 while FISSC beat Ilmington by the same score line. Shipston B had a 4-0 walkover Wildmoor who were fined and deducted two points for not fielding a side. Harbury had no match last week.

In Division Four, with previous joint leaders Campden B having no fixture, Henley B moved to the top of the table. However, unsatisfactorily it was again due to a 4-0 walkover Snitterfield B who failed to send a team and are fined and docked two points. In view of these failures by teams this week, a league committee meeting is being called where this topic will be discussed. Meanwhile, HDA Redditch moved up to second spot after sharing a 2-2 draw with fourth placed Inkberrow B. Moreton-in-Marsh B joined them in equal second by overpowering Chipping Campden C 4-0. Campden B had a free week.

In the final Division 5 Alcester C and Pershore B stay joint top after both enjoyed comfortable 4-0 victories. Alcester's was over Claverdon C while Pershore brushed aside Inkberrow C who drop two places with this result to fifth. HDA B moved up to third after their 3-1 defeat of bottom side Studley C. Meanwhile Henley C move up two places to fourth when they blasted Bidford B 4-0, although to be fair two of the four rubbers went to tie-break.
