AEGON Classic 2012 Wrap

So the AEGON Classic has come to an end for 2012 and for a second year in a row wrap-up has been extended by one day due to rain and if you’re not too sure how a blog can be delayed by rain by all means please read on.......

By the time Saturday had come round it was time for the mini tennis classic finals (mini orange and green).  Since January this year, many of the clubs throughout Warwickshire had been battling it out for a place in this year’s final.

The teams that made the finals for the mini green classic were from EPC, Solihull Arden, Sutton Coldfield, Stratford on Avon, Tanworth in Arden and Blossomfield Tennis Club.  The teams that made the mini orange finals were University of Warwick, Blossomfield Tennis Club, Solihull Arden Tennis Club, Warwick TC, Edgbaston Archery, Kenilworth Tennis Club and Leamington Lawn Tennis & Squash Club.  Congratulations should go to all teams who made the finals, which in itself was a massive feat!

By the time the Mini Tennis Classic had come to its thrilling conclusion University of Warwick had won the Mini Mini Orange Boys events with Edgbaston Priory coming out on top in the Mini Green Girls event and Solihull Arden taking home the Mini Orange Girls event crown and wining the Mini Green Boys.  Congratulations to all those clubs and to everyone who participated in the event.

The weather didn’t help matters on the weekend with most of the centre court action having to be stopped and started due to the intermittent weather conditions.  Unfortunately this meant that the various centre court demonstrations Warwickshire LTA had organised had to be cancelled.

After a round 24 hours of rain showers the clouds eventually dried out and the sun decided to show its face again.   Things were also looking promising for the attendance of the Monday final as there was a line of about 20 people outside the ticket office before they had even opened at 9.00am.  Once everyone had taken their seats many were predicting a walk in the park for number 2 seed Jelena Jankovic over qualifier Melanie Oudin however from the off it was clear that Oudin hadn’t read the script and cruised to an unlikely straight sets 6-4, 6-2 victory.  Congratulations to Melanie on her AEGON Classic 2012 victory and we look forward to seeing her back in 2013 to defend her crown.

That about is that for this year’s wrap up I would like to thank you for reading the wrap and hope you managed to look at the Warwickshire LTA Facebook and Twitter sites for those live updates and photos.  Until June 2013 its goodbye and I hope everyone enjoys Wimbledon!

See you next year, hopefully from a very new centre court!

I would like to leave you with another chance to watch the tennis freestyle on centre court……one of my favourite days of the Championships…….
