Warwickshire number 1 Dan Evans followed up his impressive victory in the qualifying stage for the US Open by winning his first round match in straight sets. Dan who is ranked 179th in the world had the biggest win of his career to date when he beat 11th seed Kei Nishikori in the first round of the US Open 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
The Warwickshire success stories didn’t finish there however as Emily Smith made her way to the finals of the Aegon British Junior National Championships. Emily was involved in a tightly contested final where she eventually lost to last year’s champion Beth Askew 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 but took the match right to the wire. However Emily soon put that disappointment to bed when she took the 18U doubles crown with her partner Lana Rush 6-47-6(2).
Further success for another young Warwickshire starlet was the continuation of Max Stewarts excellent form.
Max who was the No.1 seed in the boys’ 14U draw at the Aegon British Junior National Championships claimed the title after beating Will Davies 6-3, 6-2 in an excellent display. Upon winning Max commented “When I was about 10 I got to the semis and was comfortably beaten and that is my best performance,” he said. “Last year I got beaten really easily and played badly so to come and win it this year means a lot to me.”
Congratulations to Emily, Max and Dan on their recent successes. If you have a success story for the website please let us know at warwickshire@lta.org.uk.
