GB women to play for bronze medal

Friday, June 24, 2011

Great Britain's men's and women's deaf tennis teams bring their Dresse and Maere Cup campaigns to an end on Friday in Izmir, Turkey, when the women play Chinese Taipei in the bronze medal play-off in the Maere Cup and the men play for seventh place as they bid to end their Dresse Cup challenge on a winning note.

With one win and one loss from their opening two ties in their round-robin group of five nations, Great Britain's women ended their group contests with a flourish, winning their final two ties against Japan and Germany.

Reigning and former National champions Bethany Brookes and Beth Simmons split the opening singles rubbers of Tuesday's contest against Japan before a fine performance in the deciding doubles match saw Brookes and Simmons comfortably defeat their Japanese opponents 6-0, 6-1 to give Great Britain an overall 2-1 lead.

Brookes then gained her third victory of the day as she opened Britain's final group tie of the week against Greece, before Simmons returned to court on Wednesday to put the tie beyond Greece and 14-year-old Sophie Paul gained her first victory as a Great Britain player as she partnered Brookes to win the doubles rubber.

Britain's 3-0 victory over Greece gained the women second place in their group and a semi-final on Thursday against Spain.  With Spain having beaten Great Britain to the bronze medal in the 2007 Maere Cup in Germany, a tough contest was always on the cards and so it proved as Brookes slipped to a 0-6, 3-6 loss and Simmons lost 3-6, 1-6 to leave Great Britain with another difficult contest on Friday as they take on Chinese Taipei in a bid to secure the bronze medal.

Great Britain's men had one win from their first three group ties before taking on Turkey in their fourth contest of the week on Tuesday, but Dresse Cup debutants Ben Kelly and Nicholas Ansell both eased to victory in their singles rubbers to put the tie beyond Turkey and post another Great Britain victory.

Kelly again got Wednesday's tie against Greece off to a fine start before Daniel Tunstall, the most experienced member of the Great Britain team and playing in his fifth successive Dresse and Maere Cup, sealed another victory before partnering Nicholas Ansell to round-off a 3-0 win.

However, Kelly and Tunstall were unable to match a strong Chinese duo in their respective singles matches on Thursday, with Tunstall having the misfortune of twisting his calf at a crucial stage in the second set of his match, witth the set poised at 4-4.

Great Britain's men will now bid to end their Dresse Cup campaign on a high in their final play-off tie on Friday.
