3 Yorkshire Schools taking part in the Aegon Team Tennis Schools National Championships

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Three Yorkshire Schools have qualified for the Aegon Team Tennis Schools National Championships which are taking place this week at Graves Tennis Centre in Sheffield.

Danum Academy in Doncaster has qualified for the Boys event and Holmfirth High and Sheffield High have qualified for the Girls event.

The competition is jointly organised by the Tennis Foundation and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and aims to find the best school tennis team in the country with players in each team being in Years 7 – 13. Many of the top junior players in the country will be in attendance at the Finals competing for their schools tennis team.

The National Championships Finals is a compass draw of 16 teams which means each school will play a match on each of the four days, and finish between 1st and 16th in their event. Friday 12 July will see the Girls and Boys Finals taking place with a start time of 9am.

We wish the Yorkshire teams the best of luck this week with all their matches.

Team Photos

Each team stayed after the event for an official team photograph. I have attached a selection of these for you to look at.

New Activity

Yorkshire LTA and Graves Tennis Centre worked together with the tournament to have a few local primary schools attend the event. Year 5 pupils from local primary schools attended the finals to watch the tennis and also get on court in a coach led 1 hour session.

Meg Munn (MP for Sheffield Heeley) and Lorenzo Clark (Operations Director for SIV) attended on Friday to present the prizes.

2014 and beyond

Feedback is being received (see link below) as we look ahead to 2014 and 2015. Graves Tennis Centre is currently about to begin its next stage of redevelopments and I will be speaking closely with the centre over the next month to finalise our position in 2014 and beyond. Graves has been an excellent host of the Finals for the past two years and the weather this year really showed the benefits that Graves delivers.
