National Schools Tennis Championships a Big Hit with local Primary Schools

Friday, July 12, 2013

Primary School children in Sheffield were inspired this week by a visit to the National Schools Finals which are being held at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre in Sheffield.

The Aegon Team Tennis Schools event sees the top 16 Girls and Boys school teams in the country battle it out to be crowned National Champions. Graves Tennis Centre invited 2 local primary schools along to watch the top school players in action and also take part in a Mini Tennis session themselves.

Greenhill Primary School brought 29 pupils from across Year 5 and 6 on Wednesday who were desperate to hit some balls themselves after watching the high standard of Tennis for an hour first. The school got to see local stars Sheffield High School play and were keen to offer their support from the sidelines.

Lower Meadow Primary School came along on Thursday with 42 pupils from Year 5 who enjoyed a Mini Tennis session in the sports hall before enjoying the high quality tennis on offer in the sunshine.

Both schools seemed inspired by the tennis and put in huge effort in their own session.

Katie Higson, Tennis Manager at Graves said “It was great to have 71 children down here over the 2 days all getting a racket in their hand and getting active. To be able to show them high quality Tennis and give them something to aspire to was an extra bonus and I hope it does encourage them to take up the sport. Hopefully we can provide more opportunities for the local schools to visit Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre.”

The National Championships draw to a close on Friday, with the two schools undefeated so far playing one final match to decide the overall winners.
