Following Andy Murray’s epic Wimbledon win, Yorkshire has hosted its very own Wimbledon Tournament.
The HSBC Road to Wimbledon 14&Under County Finals took place at Nuffield Tennis Academy, Hull on the 7th July.
The County finals were the pinnacle of events held across most Yorkshire clubs and schools from throughout early summer. The winners from those competitions were invited to participate in the County finals with the prize being a place in the National Finals, where they will have the chance to compete on the grass courts of the All England Club.
The boy’s event was hotly contested with a qualifying draw of 16 players seeing 4 go through to the main draw of the event, the successful players were Benjamin Harris, Benjamin Horner, Finn Murgett and Johannus Monday, and they joined by Paul Jubb, Alex Spencer, Euan Wilson-Baig and Andre Earnshaw in the main draw.
The final of the boy’s event was challenged by Paul Jubb and Euan Wilson-Baig, with Euan winning the match 4-2, 4-2.
The girl’s event saw some fantastic tennis played with Megan Hopton, Georgina Kilbride-Woollin, Gabriella Grosvenor, Bronte Murgett, Millie Jacobs, Abigail Wild, Ruby May Broadhurst and Ester Jones.
The final of the girl’s event was contested by Megan Hopton and Ester Jones, with Megan winning the match 4-1, 4-0.
This is a fantastic event and we hope that more clubs and centres will enter the event next year.
Well done Euan and Megan and good luck at the National Finals at Wimbledon!
