Tennis Festival Day

Stocksbridge Tennis Club is celebrating the opening of their new courts and the success of their Save Our Courts appeal with a tennis festival day on Saturday 20 July, from 1-5pm with an opening ceremony at 3pm. Every half hour a different coach on a different court will run fun tennis activities. The event is free and open to all to come along and play – all ages, families, current & past players, beginners. There will be a café with cakes and refreshments.
Last year the club was under threat of closure due to the state of the courts. The club ran a Save Our Courts appeal and despite being turned down for larger grants managed to raise the money to resurface and resize the courts themselves. Many members have also worked hard digging trenches, breaking up the old steps and cutting fences.
Chair, Martin says ‘This time last year we thought the club could not continue without new courts and now we have them! This is a great achievement for a small Stocksbridge & Penistone community club with no big grants. The most generous has been the Co-op Community Fund with £1,180 and Sheffield Town Trust with £1,000. We’ve also had smaller grants from local organisations and have begged contributions from members and the public and many in the community have recognised that the club is worth keeping. We are thankful to have been able to use Penistone Grammar School Sport Centre Tennis Courts while the work has been done but are delighted to be back playing at the courts in Stocksbridge. We really hope people come along on Saturday, try out the new courts and join in the fun.’
