Emma Parkin (Secretary) and Liz Smith (Treasurer) applied to Sport England last year and heard in July that they had secured the full amount requested of £50,000. Calderdale MBC and Hebden Royd Town Council matched the funding with £3,000and £5,000 respectively.
Work started pulling the old clubhouse down last autumn, and the new one was erected early in 2013. Consent was given by Calderdale to fell 11 trees which overhung one of the courts, and these were removed in March. Due to the snow and cold weather the re-surfacing of the courts (by Leisure Surfaces, Cheshire) had been delayed until the very last minute, and the tarmac was laid Monday-Thursday last week and the lines painted on Friday, which was the day before the opening!
Cragg Vale Tennis Club was established in 1925 and moved to the picturesque grounds of Old Cragg Hall in 1963. So the club celebrated 50 years at its current location with a complete transformation!
The open day was attended by well over 100 people, including members past and present and the local community. Conor McLoughlin from Angela Crossley Tennis Coaching delivered a varied coaching session for over 30 juniors during the day. O’Neills Sports from Huddersfield provided the opportunity for players to try different rackets in readiness for the coming season. A BBQ and homemade cakes were provided by members of the club.
The club is providing a comprehensive coaching programme and will encourage local schools to use the new facilities in order to gain more new members, and hopefully ensure its survival for the next 50 years!
