Stocksbridge Welcomes the LTA President

On Friday, Cathie Sabin, President of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), came to visit the thriving community tennis club of Stocksbridge. She wanted to find out a little bit more about its history and the recent success the club has had in growing the sport of ‘tennis for all’ in this small part of Yorkshire.

Cathie was accompanied by the LTA’s Northern Region Development Manager, Paul Sheard, who has been assisting Stocksbridge Tennis Club with its application for floodlighting and has arranged for the LTA Northern facilities development team to support the club in going forward with floodlighting.

On the day of the visit, and despite some wet weather, a number of players braved the elements to enjoy Friday Social Tennis.  Cathie had a tour of the club and heard from members about the club’s developments and how it encourages tennis for all.  Brenda Duffield, who was a member of the club in the 1950's, also came along to meet Cathie, brought some old photographs and provided information about how the club became established in the 1920's.  On behalf of the LTA Cathie thanked everyone for all the hard work being done and time given in developing and managing a voluntary run community tennis club.

For anyone interested in taking up tennis, the Friday Social Tennis customarily takes place between 1.30pm-3pm and is generally targeted at beginners and improvers. Social tennis sessions are free for members. Non-members are welcome to three free visits to play social tennis at the club or to play with friends who are club members. Further details of other tennis sessions run at Stocksbridge and Penistone can be found on the club website stocksbridgetennisclub.org or by contacting tennis@stocksbridgetennisclub.org.uk
