Last weekend saw Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal team up to represent ‘Team Europe’ at the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague. The two rivals who usually face each other from across the net took on ‘Team World’s Sam Querrey & Jack Sock in the doubles, defeating them 10-5 in a match tiebreak. Team competitions such as the Davis Cup & the Laver Cup have brought an exciting new format to tennis fans and young players in Yorkshire can compete in a series of fun team competitions too thanks to the launch of the Team Challenge Big Weekend!
Team Challenge is a flexible, social competition where teams play against each other in a fun event. Each event is aimed at mini & junior tennis players who are new to competition but want to make their mark on court with their friends! There are different age categories and entries are accepted in teams or individually – most events can pair players up on the day and boys & girls can play together. Players can expect prizes, giveaways, ridiculous team names and mascots at Team Challenge events.
The Team Challenge Big Weekend is taking place over 7th and 8th October, and there are loads of different events to choose from in the Leeds, West Yorkshire and York areas!
- Thornhill Tennis Club, 7th October, 10am-1pm – ages 10-16
- Thornhill Tennis Club, 8th October, 12.30pm-3pm – ages 5-9
- Wheldrake Tennis Club, 8th October, 2-4pm, ages 10-16
- Chapel Allerton Tennis Club, 7th October, 2-4pm, ages 8-10
- Horsforth Tennis Club, 7th October, 2-4pm, ages 5-9
- Horsforth Tennis Club, 8th October, 1-3pm, ages 10-14
‘The Team Challenge event offers players the chance to give tennis matches a go in a flexible, relaxed environment’ said Christine Randall-Klee, Regional Tennis Competitions Coordinator for the Lawn Tennis Association in the North. ‘Being part of a team playing fast paced, fun matches for prizes guarantees maximum fun and less pressure for inexperienced young players so I would encourage all budding players to give it a go!’.
