Abbeydale Tennis Club have held their first Junior Davis Cup, where we had 60 children competing. Each of our 6 tennis coaches had a team of 10 players, ranging from age 5-17. The teams played each other in both singles and doubles from Mini Red- using the sponge bulls, right up to full ball tennis.
Each team had a country name, the countries were - England, Ireland, Brazil, Holland, USA and Spain. All the players got a coloured uniform, with their team name on the back, and had their face painted and hair sprayed in their team colours.
The event took place in a party atmosphere with nearly 200 spectators coming down to watch the kids battle it out. The kids had drums, and party poppers to make as much noise as possible to cheer on their team mates.
In the end, Spain beat Holland in the final, and all children were presented with a medal and the winning team got a gold medal each and a trophy.
Their next event is taking place on Sunday 21st April 12-4pm and this will be a Mini Tennis Olympics, with much the same format in terms of countries, flags, t-shirts, face paint and medals- but instead of playing tennis matches- the kids will take part in team tennis events, such as aiming at targets etc.
Why not come down and check it out!
