Results

v Warwickshire 0-8

v Leicestershire 2-6

v Lincolnshire 2-6

v Northamptonshire 4-4 (Notts won the shoot out)

Venue

We played at Corby Tennis Centre.  It’s a nice Club with six outdoor courts, which have recently been resurfaced, and six indoor courts.  The playing conditions were tough as it was very windy all weekend and wet on the final day.

Day 1

We faced Warwickshire and Leicestershire.  Both counties were strong and had good depth to their teams.  Unfortunately we lost all matches to Warwickshire.  This was a good experience for the team to play against them as they were all higher rated and they dealt with the difficult conditions well.

Against Leicestershire we had some closer matches but didn’t quite produce our best tennis.  Phoenix had an excellent win against their number 2 who was higher rated than him.

Day 2

Conditions were very windy and wet on the final day making the balls heavy and slow.  The courts were difficult to move on.

First we played Northamptonshire.  After the singles we were 1-2 down.  Phoenix again grabbed another victory playing an excellent match in tough conditions.  We needed to win the doubles.  After going a set down Daniel and Phoenix pulled off a stunning comeback to win in 3 sets and then went on to win the shoot out!

Next we played Lincolnshire.  We were again down 1-2 after the singles and Phoenix pulled off another upset against a higher rated opponent winning his singles match 4-2 5-3 against their number 3.  Daniel and Phoenix needed to produce another upset in the doubles, but after having match points in the match tie break they eventually lost 5-3 1-4 1-0 (11-9).

Even though we didn’t get the results we wanted the team put up a good fight and fought hard in all of our matches.  The Notts boys showed excellent team spirit despite facing stronger counties.  Overall it was a good experience for our team and we narrowly missed out on finishing the event in 3rd place.  If we would have beaten Lincolnshire.

A big thank you to all the parents that came to support and their commitment to the team over the weekend.  Without you these great events wouldn’t be possible!
