Success for Surrey in 12U County Cup National Finals

Matt Trevail and Ben Cullen along with players (from left to right): Jamie Forrest, Krisnaa Muhunthakumar, Harry Hewing, Raffaello Papajcik)

Not to be eclipsed by the Finals at Wimbledon over the weekend, our Boys and Girls 12U County Cup Team put in some fantastic performances that did Tennis Surrey proud. I am pleased to report that our Girls finished 3rd and our Boys are 2015 County Cup Champions. Here is a breakdown of how they got on.

12U Boys- County Cup Champions

Team:

Jamie Forrest

Harry Hewing

Krisnaa Muhunthakumar

Raffaello Papajcik

After their heroics in qualifying, the boys continued their excellent form and cruised through their group stage at the Finals. This set up a final showdown with Middlesex. Once again, they would have to beat higher rated and ranked players to achieve County Cup glory. An amazing team spirit helped the boys to rise to the challenge and beat Middlesex 6-2.

Well done to Jamie, Harry, Krisnaa and Raffaello who all put in some fine individual performances throughout County Cup. We wish them all well in their Tennis for the summer season.

A huge thank you must also go to Team Manager Matt Trevail and Coach Ben Cullen for all their hard work. They undoubtedly played a part in instilling this strong team spirit that helped inspire the players to succeed. Full results can be found on the link below:

12U Girls- 3rd Place

Team:

Dalanda Bah

MJ Changwereza

Sally Pethybridge

Hattie Vanneman

Similar to qualifying, the girls made another strong start and set up a showdown with Wiltshire to decide who was going to progress to the Final. After all 4 matches, it was tied and there was nothing to separate the teams. Therefore a shootout was required. After getting off to a strong start in the tiebreak shootout, the Surrey girls narrowly lost out in a thriller. However, the girls did not let this tough defeat get them down, and the following day came out fighting in the 3rd/4th place match against Hertfordshire. And the girls were dominant, securing an 8-0 win and a well-deserved 3rd place.

Many congratulations to Dalanda, MJ, Sally and Hattie for battling hard throughout the Finals. I am sure they will come back even more determined for next year.

Big thanks also to Team Manager Penny Batchelor and Coach Chris Tucker for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout the event. Full results can be found on the link below:

These fine performances now put Surrey in a very strong position in the County Cup Race. With the Men’s and Women’s County Cup events on the horizon, things are looking bright for Tennis Surrey.

Team Surrey is on the up!
