Winners decided at BUCS Tennis Individual Championships

Stirling and Durham showed their tennis pedigree as the two universities provided both finalists for the men’s and women’s singles respectively at the British Universities amd Colleges Sport (BUCS) Tennis Individual Championships in Sheffield this weekend.

Graves Tennis Centre played host to competitors from 28 universities at the Championships, which saw a 40 percent increase in entries from last year, with 181 men and 106 women competing in the singles and 64 men and 26 women in the doubles.

Nick Rosenzweig took the spoils in the men’s final as he defeated fellow Stirling University player Joseph Gill 6-2, 6-0.

But Gill did pick up a title later in the day when he joined forces with Rihards Emulins in the doubles final to defeat Leeds Metropolitan pair Elliot Chang and Harry Brown 6-4, 3-6, (10-6).

It was Durham who dominated in the women’s event as Reka Zsilinszka overcame Kseniia Tokarieva 6-4, 6-3 before the duo teamed up in the doubles final. But they lost out to another of Durham’s pairings, Sally Pearson and Lucy Scott, 6-4, 6-2.

“It is great to see such a competitive field for this key event in the BUCS calendar. It is encouraging to see a larger entry this year and hopefully this event can continue to grow into a first class competition for all players involved in competitive tennis at university. Congratulations to all the winners!” said Iain Bates, BUCS Sports Advisory Group Chair for Tennis.

“University tennis in Britain is gaining more and more recognition and excellent events like the BUCS Individual Finals help to raise the profile with highly competitive matches like we saw this weekend,” added the Tennis Foundation’s Higher Education Manager Alistair Higham.
