Oliver Okonkwo stars in Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club finals

OLIVER Okonkwo was the star on show at the 2015 Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club finals with five wins at junior and senior level.

Okonkwo, who is tipped to be a future champion of the sport, won the Men’s Singles Open title after a 7-6(5), 6-3 win against runner-up Andrew Flynn.

He was then crowned Under-18 (U18) Boys Singles winner following a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory over Tom Swanson.

At senior level, he teamed with Holly Russell to win the Mixed Doubles against Richard Downs and Jessica Bull, followed by success in the Mixed Doubles with father, Oliver Okonkwo. The losing parent and child pairing was Nicholas and Paul Rowe (6-1, 6-0).

Oliver Okonkwo, the Most Improved Player at junior level, also took home the U15 Boys Doubles Crown with James Okonkwo after a 6-2, 7-6(5) win against Oliver Hills and Nicholas Rowe.

Not far behind him with four wins all fellow junior member Joseph Brittain, whose haul included a round robin victory in the Red Singles event –- Lily Doherty was runner-up.

Brittain revelled in more singles success in the Orange category, this time dispatching of Toby Wheeler 7-5, 2-7, 7-3 in the final.

The young starlet paired with Dina Lipovski to take home the Red Doubles award, beating Dylan and Lily Doherty 10-4.

Brittain completed his four-timer with victory in the Orange Doubles, combining with Wheeler to see off Bobby Pocock and Shreya Walia 11-9, 7-2.

Russell showed all of her credentials with more medals in open matches, most notably the Ladies Singles crown after a 6-1, 6-0 win against Claire Roberts.

Russell then teamed up with Jemma Lancaster, who has already enjoyed success on the international scene, for victory in the Ladies Doubles, seeing off Jessica Bull and Kellie Johnston 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

Also a winner at the 2015 finals, was the Observer’s very-own Mike Swift, who won the Mixed Doubles Handicap with Anita Moiser. The duo recovered from a slow start to beat Rob and Claire Castignetti 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in a thrilling final.  

Amongst the junior male players to have won more than won one award at the finals are James Okonkwo and Sebastian Harris, whilst Xanthe Ashe matched that feat for the girls.

In the senior division, double success fell to Timothy Paton, Nigel Mann, Cedric Egby, Mike Bottomley, Dave Reid and Jacqui Bird.
