Ball over the net

This year the competition was held at East Devon Tennis Centre Exmouth on the 7th April.

History was made twice in the Men’s event. Firstly a new format was introduced by referee Tom Vinall due to the late withdrawal of the fourth team. A Round Robin event was staged with all pairs playing 4 rubbers. 7 hours and 233 individual games later Westward Ho! emerged as winners for the first time in the club’s history. Dan Lobato and Lewie Parker were undefeated and together with their second pair of Rob Shaw and Dan Grigg amassed 5 wins. Runners Up with 4 wins were Victoria Park while Tavistock took 3rd place with 3 wins.

Westward Ho! winners of Men's Vernon Weaver Championship

The ladies played to the traditional format.

In the semi finals, Torquay defeated Samford Peverell 4-0 whilst Devonshire beat Westward Ho! by the same scoreline.

The final was played in the afternoon. A strong Torquay team retained their title losing only one set all day. The tennis was of a very high quality and it was nice to see representatives of Devon County’s juniors and veterans on court together in these matches.

Torquay ladies, winners of the Vernon Weaver Championships 2013 Thanks to Exmouth Tennis Centre for their hospitality and to Jo Louis and Dave Vinall for presenting the trophies.
