After winning through the County finals back at the beginning of July, the youngsters had all been looking forward to the chance of playing at Wimbledon. All 3 had the experience of playing on the Championship grass courts as well as Aorangi Park practice courts.
Emerson played on court 19 twice, Lucy played on 14 & 19 and Erik played on 17. The grass was a new experience for many players but with good weather & little wind it proved to be an enjoyable first time experience for the Devon teens.
Emerson Styles was the most successful Devon player winning his group then his next round before losing to the number 2 seed Miles McDowall 1-6, 6-7 (9-11).
Emerson said, "I could not wait to play at Wimbledon, I was nervous and excited at the same time. I was looking forward to the exprience and hoped to do well. I enjoyed playing on grass, it was better than I expected. I adapted well and the grass courts suited my game because they are fast. My favourte court was Championship Court 19, I got to play on this court twice and won both times. My dream would have been to play on Court 18 and I was only one match short of being called to play on it..........damn!!
The highlight of the week was nearly taking a set off the No 2 seed, ranked No 1 nationally. I had four set points against him but couldn't convert, he bigged up his power serve and I lost in the tie break 11 - 9.
I won four out of 5 singles matches and finished first in my box. I played doubles with my Devon team mate Erik Wilson. We won one match then got knocked out by the No 1 seeds. We got thrashed but it was great fun!
Overall it was a great experience and I now know I like to play on grass at Wimbledon!"
As well as the tennis there were organised tours around the grounds and museum, £30 worth of vouchers to spend in the shop & an evening of entertainment at the Club.
All the players had a great time as the atmosphere was relaxed with everyone enjoying the opportunity of seeing what it's like to be in the shoes of the top players.
One day they might fill them!
