Racket & Balls

Devon's second home match against Suffolk was one they had to win in order to have a chance of promotion for next season and the visitors arrived with the reputation of being a tough side to beat.

Devon's second pair, Les Harries & Mel Kirby took a sunstantial early lead and took the first set 6-3.  Despite a second set setback, losing 4-6, they surged to a massive lead in the Chapionship tie-break and won it 10-1. First pair Doug Cook and David Evans also built a winning lead but faltered and had to break service to get back to 6-6.  the tie-break was similarly tight and fluctuating but the Devon apir dug in to win it 9-7 and clinched an easier second set 6-2.

The reverse singles was more straightforward. the Suffolk first pair were too consistent for Harries & Kirby in a rubber of long rallies.  Cook & Evans then had to win their rubber to clinch the match which they did in good order, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Devon's win completed a successful summer in which the team won 4 out of 5 matches. Thnaks and congratulations to Doug Cook, Mel Kirby, Les Harries and captain David Evans.
