The Devon U9’s mixed County team finished third at the Aegon County Cup this past weekend which took place at Taunton. The boys were represented by Zac Brown, Lucas Urquiza, Parker Caleshu and Freddie Ryland with the girls’ team featuring Margaux Slade, Elizabeth Warrender, Victoria Syms and Lucy Ward. Team captains for the event were Simon Huddart and Kendal Brown.
Devon were placed in a round robin box that included Avon, Dorset, Somerset, and Cornwall with all of the singles matches played in the morning and doubles in the afternoon. First up were Dorset and despite a good performance by Lucas, who won his singles, we were 10-2 down with the doubles to come later in the day. The team responded well to the early setback going 12-0 up on Somerset with good straight sets wins in all of the six singles matches. This was followed by taking on the favourites Avon who had good depth in their squad and despite everyone contributing their best efforts we were 12-0 down after the singles with Zac and Lucas being the only two players to win sets in this particular fixture. Last but not least we then took on Cornwall and finished strongly to lead our local rivals 10-2 after the singles.
The afternoon saw all the doubles matches played and there was terrific communication, team spirit and even a few chest bumps amongst the Devon players! This saw Devon win 7 of the 10 doubles matches that were played and leave us in 3rd place with the following final scores against the other counties 16-2 vs Cornwall, 18-0 vs Somerset, 4-14 vs Avon and 2-16 vs Dorset.
A big well done to all the players who thoroughly enjoyed the day and thank you to the parents for giving up their time and supporting the team very well throughout the day.
