Second tennis facility opens in Dorset in as many weeks

Monday, July 01, 2013

Tennis in Dorset received another boost this week after Winton Park in Bournemouth opened their new facilities.

The news comes just days after Poole Park launched its new park courts ensuring that those inspired to pick up a racket during The Championships, Wimbledon have every opportunity to do so.

Thanks to a £130,000 grant from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Winton Park opened six new courts, four of which are floodlit, with a successful open day. More than 100 children and adults turned up to have a go on court.

The site will also be run using the successful key fob system already in place at Shelley Park and Swanmore Gardens in Bournemouth and Poole Park. This system, which is unique to Dorset, allows families to use the online booking system to access the courts and at a cost of £24 per annum for a family to play year round tennis is extremely good value.

James Deem, the LTA’s Tennis Development Manager for Dorset and Somerset, said: “After the success of Shelley Park, it’s wonderful to see more park sites being managed and opened at the affordable price of £24 a year for the whole family. It is a great offer to the people of Dorset to access the sport with fantastic local facilities.”

Member of Parliament for Bournemouth West, Conor Burns, added: “I am delighted to see the new courts being opened at Winton Park. I’m sure the success of the programme at Shelley Park will be replicated at these new sites, and will help more people in the community to enjoy the sport of tennis on their doorstep.”
