This year the Men’s team played in Group 4 at Redbridge in Essex. The team comprised Richard Irwin, Matt Coombes, Alistair Barnes, Tim Prossor, Adam Watson, Piers Herfet-Jones, debutant Adam Glynn and myself. We also had Rhys Hanger who was able to come on Friday to play but could only stay for one day due to work and family commitments.
Daily report for the weekend
Day 1 – Hampshire & IOW
Won 6-3
Singles wins for Adam Glynn, Tim Prossor, Rhys Hanger and Richard Irwin and losses in 3 sets for Alistair Barnes and myself meant we were 4-2 up going into the doubles. Barnes and Prossor lost the first doubles putting the score at 4-3 but with good wins from Coombes and Watson and Irwin and Sanger meant a good 6-3 win.
Day 2 – Staffordshire
Won 7-2
We won all of our singles with wins for Adam Glynn, Tim Prossor, Adam Watson, Alistair Barnes, Richard Irwin and myself and this meant we were 6-0 up going into the doubles. Barnes and Coombes and Watson and Prossor lost their doubles but Irwin and substitute Herfet Jones won resulting in a very good 7-2 win.
Day 3 – North Wales
Won 5-1
Results went our way on the previous day meaning we knew that we needed four rubber wins to secure promotion. The day started well with Matt Coombes and Adam Glynn getting us off to a great start winning at 6 & 5. Tim Prossor lost a very good match at 4 but with a great win by Adam Watson at 3 meant we had a 3-1 lead needing just one more rubber win to get promoted. Alistair Barnes started slowly and went one set down but managed to turn the match around finally winning 6-0 in the third set meaning we had our 4 rubbers to get promoted. However Richard Irwin put on a great performance at number 1 to win in 3 sets to secure the days win with a score of 5-1. As aconsequence we did not need to play the remaining doubles matches.
So we were champions in division 4 and get promoted to division 3 for next year’s competition. Overall it was a great display from our youngsters. All the players had great attitudes and worked hard for the team.
