On a cold weekend at Queenswood Hertfordshire 12U’s,11U’s and 10U’s retained the prestigious Lionel Cox Trophy in its’ 39th year.
The teams got on with business on Saturday and were lying quietly in all 6 boxes ready to make their final assault for the title on Sunday to strive to the top of the pile. Essex boys were concerning us along with Bucks girls as in both cases they were looking for 1st and 2nd positions. However with our 12U Boys and Girls coming in 1st and gaining their age group titles, followed by our 11U’s Girls picking up a 2nd place and the 11U Boys, 10U Boys and 10U Girls all coming in 3rd Sunday proved to be a very successful day. Many of our matches were won on 3rd set match tie breaks and nerves were fraying in the supporters group, but we maintained our Herts belief and came through.
Many thanks to our Herts Captains, Ian Zellner, Sam Bruce, Tim Walter, James Thomas, Tony Staley and to all our supporters, parents, family and friends. It was a great weekend’s tennis and all our players should be very proud of representing Hertfordshire with enthusiasm, skill, determination and very good behaviour. Herts also helped Northants out with a 12U Boys team who performed very well coming 5th and a 10U girl who also won 2 of her matches. Our Player Captains Danielle Latter and Tom Watts thanked Sarah Tricks and Neil Songer and their team for the smooth running of the event and I would like to re-iterate that from all the 8 East Region Counties.
Queenswood was as always a great venue with courts in good condition and the excellent catering was much appreciated. Many thanks to all involved.
Roll on 2013 and the 40th year of a great event with a much sort after Trophy.
Herts Team Manager.
