Last weekend we had three juniors playing in UK tournaments. The youngest was 6 year old Magnus Benson (sorry Magnus I said you were 7 in last week’s news). He was playing in the Bolton Arena in and 8&U Red ball event and had three wins 10– 4, 10-2 and 10-1 but lost two matches to stronger boys 8-10 and 5-10. I’m told he enjoyed the experience. Both Magnus and sister Millicent are planning to play in Manchester and Taunton during the half-term. Meanwhile Jack Christian had a successful ratings event in the Liverpool Tennis Centre winning 4/0 4/0 and 4/1 4/0. Charlotte Clarke (13) was away yet again this time playing a 16&U grade 3 event at Nottingham Trent University. She had earned the qualifying place from her previous success in Shrewsbury. This was bound to be a tough event and so it proved. Her first match was versus the no.2 seed and she lost 0/6/ 0/6. Her opponent was ranked 102 in UK 16&U whilst Charlotte is 377. That result toughened her up and she won her next two matches 6/2 7/6 and 6/1 6/1 earning a place in the consolation final, which lasted just under 2 hours, losing 2/6 5/7. She will be playing again in UK in three weeks time but doesn’t know which event she gains entry into.
