The death took place in August of Nancy Wightman who played a very significant part in Kent Tennis during the years 1978 to 1992.
As a Tennis player, she joined Dartford Tennis Club in Watling Street where she met her husband Jack. They moved later to the J and E Halls club at Princes Road after the Dartford Club closed down. Her Kent tennis career began in 1978 when she joined the Juniors Committee under Chairman J C Lance. Elected to the Council in 1979, Nancy took over as Chairman of the Juniors Committee in 1982, a position she held up to 1992. Her energy and enthusiasm and no nonsense approach to promoting Tennis became quickly apparent. I am sure many Juniors of this era will recall the annual championships held then at the Nat West Bank at Copers Cope Road in Beckenham with Nancy and her committee which included Anne Williams , Cynthia Smith , Sandra Honey, Bill Thursby, and Ian Brown to name a few running the show . Fred Harbour was the tournament Referee.
Nancy was awarded County colours in 1988 for her contribution to Kent Tennis. Our sympathy goes out to her children Geoffrey, Derek and Angela. May she rest in peace
