The Inter-County Championships for veterans was introduced by the LTA, operating through a veterans’ sub-committee, in 1981 with an event for Men 45. A Women’s 40 category followed in 1984 and the Men’s 55 in 1988. Administration of the Championships was passed to Vets Tennis GB in 2002. Further age groups have been added gradually so that there are now six Men’s and six Women’s divisions with matches being played from late March/April through to the finals, between the winners of Divisions A and B, held at David Lloyd Dudley in November. The finals in 2012 will be held from 2nd to 4th November.

Kent are the defending champions in the Over 70s Ladies Competition and played 5 group matches which they won, to reach the final in November
In the finals in 2011, Middlesex and Kent were all square at 2 rubbers each at the end of the match and equal on 5 sets apiece, three of the rubbers having gone the distance. Fortunately Kent won on a count back of games by 42 to 31.
The team for 2012 is captained by non-playing Cynthia Smith and the team members for 2012 are Cynthia, Ruth Illingworth, Marcia Ackers, Helen Jary and Janet Broster. They will face either Surrey/Middlesex or Northumberland who are yet to complete their matches.
In the Over 65s Ladies Competition Kent was captained by Judy Woodley and they made it through to the finals winning through a tough division by achieving the best match results than the other counties. Also in the Over 50s Men’s Competition, Kent captained by Dominic Wood, and the Men’s 65s are also through to the finals.
The Ladies Over 50s team captained by Hazel Lindfield have won four of the four group matches played, with one still to play on Sunday 9th September, away to Lincolnshire. If they win this match they will also be playing in the finals in November – fingers crossed!
Best of luck to all our players in the finals!
