CITC glow crazy for new competition

Monday, January 04, 2016

City in the Community hosted its first ‘glow-in-the-dark’ sports competition this week, welcoming youngsters from across the North West to take part.

The event was a Glow Tennis Tournament and participants from CITC had the opportunity to represent Manchester City Football Club in this unique competition.

Foundations from Bolton Wanderers Football Club, Wigan Athletic Football Club and Manchester United Football joined CITC as part of the Premier League 4 Sport Project, which uses the power of football to engage with youngsters and encourage an active lifestyle.

Since 2009, Premier League 4 Sport has worked with over 68,000 young people and CITC are engaging with over 500 participants across six sports: Badminton, Basketball, Judo, Volleyball, Netball, and Tennis.

Hannah Hipkin-Steele, PL4S/Women and Girls Co-ordinator at CITC said: “We wanted to try something new and unique to attract more participants to the project but also give our existing participants a chance to compete against other clubs in a different way than just playing tennis!”

Samuel Foakes, Regional Tennis Participation Manager said: “What a novel approach to running a tennis competition for young people! The lighting effect created by the glow tennis kit made the atmosphere completely different to traditional tennis and more like a night club! Glow tennis presents a fantastic opportunity to engage a new audience of young people to help grow the game.”

If know anyone who is interested in taking part in the Premier League 4 Sport project, please contact Hannah Hipkin-Steele on 0161 438 7844 or email hannah.hipkin-steele@cityfootball.com
