Leicestershire is proving to be a major force in national and international veterans' tennis.

At the recent world championships at Anatalya, Spain, the county had four players in the Great Britain team.

Former world top-20 star Mark Cox was joined by ex-county champion Richard Tutt, who captained the team, Shirley Fox and Gill Thompson.

Thompson's women's 75 group team fared best, finishing runners-up to the United States.

Tutt and Cox stayed in Anatalya for a second week to compete in the individual event with Tutt a runner-up in the doubles.

Leicestershire's David Ireland and Jeremy Trafford have been selected to represent Britain in San Diego in the 40 and 55 age-groups.

Stoneygate-based Leicestershire Tennis Club have an unprecedented five men's teams in next weeks' veterans British club finals in the 35, 45, 50, 55 and 60 age-groups.

In addition, the club's women's 40s team are through to the national semi-finals.

Last year The Leicestershire won the title of veterans club of the year based on the quantity and quality of their teams.

Tutt, of Knighton, said: "Vets tennis now comprises 52 per cent of the sport in this country and is by a long way the most successful. There is so much going on in this sector of tennis and it is rapidly expanding both here and internationally.
