Sportivate is a £56 million Lottery funded legacy project that aims to capture the excitement from London 2012 and provide attractive sporting opportunities for teenagers and young adults, aged 11 - 25.
This is done by providing them with six to eight weeks of coaching in a sport of their choice and be guided into regular participation within their community.
Sportivate launched in June 2011 as a four-year programme aimed at 14-25 year-olds but, due to its success, additional funding of £10m per year has been invested allowing the programme to run until March 2017. The Sportivate targeted age range was extended in September 2013 to offer 11-13 year-olds the opportunity to participate.
Target Audience
Sportivate targets 11-25 year olds who may not seek out sporting opportunities themselves or those who are doing sport for a very limited amount of time. These participants might be described as the 'semi-sporty'. The target group was selected for this campaign because research shows that the period in which people leave full time education and start to lead more independent lives is when many stop, and do not resume, regular sports participation.
Local funding
Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) will receive funding to deliver the Sportivate programme across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, with a target to inspire 6,400 young people aged 11-25 to get involved in sport.
Recent figures show that 3,983 teenagers and young adults in the county have already benefitted from free or discounted six-to-eight week sports coaching courses through Sportivate. Of these, 3,091 have successfully completed their course, missing no more than one session
Local Funding and Application Process
Funding will be distributed in the following way:
- 80% of funding will be available for our 9 Local Sport Alliances (LSAs). Any clubs or organisations wanting to deliver a project in one of these areas would need to submit a Delivery Plan via the individual LSA.
- 20% of funding will be available in an 'Open Fund' for clubs or organisations that will be delivering projects across the county rather than in one specific area. Applications should be submitted directly to Dan Mitchinson, Sport Development Officer at Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport.
Clubs and organisations will now be able to apply for funding to deliver Sportivate projects in two separate funding rounds, dependant on the delivery date of the projects.
- Round 1: For projects to be deliveredbetween April 2014 and September 2014.
Round 2: For projects to bedelivered between October 2014 and March 2015.
As part of the application process, delivers are asked to state confirmed delivery dates, times and locations for each block within the window in which they are applying.
