CARISBROOKE RETAIN MERCURY CUP IN TIGHT CONTEST

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Carisbrooke Tennis Club retained The 'Leiceter Mercury Cup' after a 6 hour marathon final against pre-match favourites Loughborough.
The poor weather forced play indoors to the nearby Loughborough University.
The match hinged around the second round of matches in which two of Carisbrookes's pairs came through in tense third set tie breaks. Jack Simpson and Liz Mansell just pipped Mark Winship and Emma Rossiter whilst Bobby Brookes and partner Helen Shaw overcame Martin Waite and Victoria Bullock.
Going into the final round, either side could have won. When Lougborough pulled back one rubber with Waite and Bullock beating Alex Oldfield and Franky Gutteridge the match was poised on a knife's edge. However, Brookes and Shaw showed nerves of steel by again edging out their opponents,Winship and Rossiter, in another third set tie break to give Carisbrooke an unassailable 5-3 overall score.
Victorious captain Liz Mansell commented 'we were not the favourites going into Saturday's final but our gusty performances pulling through several tight matches in the third set tie breaks gave us enough momentum to just edge it over a very talented Loughborough side'.
The win gave the Knighton based club their 33rd 'Leicester Mercury Cup' since the competition'sinception in the 1920's.
