Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Loughborough University tennis stars Scott Whitbread and Amanda Elliot have been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2013 World University Games (WUGs) in Kazan, Russia next month.
The team, which is funded by Britain’s leading tennis charity the Tennis Foundation, is made up of six British athletes from universities at home and in America.
Whitbread and Elliot will be looking to help Britain improve on their performance at the 2011 WUGs in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, where current world no. 340 Ed Corrie and doubles partner Daniel Cochrane reached the quarter-final stage.
Whitbread, 21, said: “It’s a real honour to be picked for Great Britain and I’m incredibly excited to have the chance to travel to Russia to represent my country.
“I’m confident we can do a good job out there and the aim definitely has to be going one better than how the team did last time around in Hong Kong.”
Barry Scolo, Tennis Team Manager, added: “I believe we have selected a strong competitive team with a good mix of singles and doubles players. In addition, it’s nice to have a good balance of players from American and UK universities bringing different ideas and experiences.”
The World University Games, taking place in 2013 in Kazan during the 6th – 17th July, is the second largest multisport event in the world, after the Olympic Games, with more than 13,000 participants representing 170 countries.
A Great Britain delegation of 175 will take part with athletes competing in artistic gymnastics, badminton, fencing, football, judo, rugby 7’s, shooting, swimming and tennis.
