Mark Wormleighton 2016!

Friday, September 30, 2016

Congratulations to Tabitha Holmes and Matthew McKinnon, winners of this year’s Mark Wormleighton Trophy!

The tournament in its 39th year, was set up in memory of Mark, a then county player who died tragically at the age of 11.

Eight boys and eight girls were invited to play for the trophies. Matches were extremely tight at all stages of the event. Isabella Cockrell who was competing in her first yellow ball event, narrowly lost in a third set match tie break 11-9 against Deni Smith. Talia Neilson-Gatenby and Tabitha Holmes had a real battle in the semi-final, with Tabitha coming out the victor. Tabitha then put up an equally impressive fight against Maisy Smith to become the overall winner.
Considering the format was short sets, the match between Dylan Sanghera and Jack Minski took almost 2 hours – both boys played an amazing standard of tennis. Dylan’s second match against Oliver Griffiths was another battle, again going to a tie break but Dylan came out victorious. The final, Dylan against Matt McKinnon showed Matt’s strength and maturity on the day, giving him the overall victory.
Congratulations go to every player - I cannot stress enough what an amazing standard of players we have in Leicestershire at this young age – the future is bright for Leicestershire Tennis!

We are delighted that Mrs Wormleighton still supports the tournament. This year the tournament was held at Loughborough University and Mrs Wormleighton presented the trophies to Tabitha and Matthew.
