The South Somerset Tennis Development Group this week has launched its Summer Competition Program for Summer 2013. With entries in South Somerset events on a steady rise since 2006, clubs in South Somerset are looking forward to hosting busy events run by one of the Groups three qualified referees. Peter Lewis, David Kirkman and Mark Pollard deliver events across a wide range of venues at Grade 5 and Grade 6 across all junior age groups from mini tennis to U18. The events attract local interest from players as well as attracting players from further afield.
The Development Group is Chaired by Jake Hannis, Senior Sport and Healthy Lifestyle Officer at South Somerset District Council with support from James Deem (Tennis Development Manager for Somerset and Dorset) and Steve Gass (School Games Organiser for South Somerset). The Group supports and resources a number of programs outside of competition including Primary and Secondary School Links, Adults new to tennis and returning to tennis, disability tennis and tennis in the wider community.
Since 2006 the Group has set its own constitution and established financial resources with support of the Council, LTA, Tennis Foundation and Sport England. The Development Group that comprises of 11 clubs, their coaches and referees across the South Somerset District Council Area. The clubs involved are Yeovil, Misterton, Somerton, Tintinhull, Martock, Queen Camel, North Cadbury, Wincanton, Ilminster, Chard and South Petherton.
