Henry Field and Bethany Lacey have both returned with silverware from the 9th Annual Dorchester Junior Open, after outstanding individual performances in their singles tournaments.
Field was playing as the number one seed in the boys under 16s singles tournament and he duly delivered by cruising through the draw to a great victory. He dropped just eight games in his three matches, that included a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dorset’s Alex Fariman, a 6-3, 6-0 victory against George Morrissey, also of Dorset, and a 6-4, 6-1 win in the final against his third Dorset opponent of the tournament, Connor Townsend.
Lacey entered the girls under 16s draw as the top seed and quickly announced her intentions at the tournament by registering a 4-0, 4-0 victory in the quarter-finals, before completing a 4-2, 4-0 win over Dorset’s Annabel Redding. Lacey then faced the tournament’s second seed and fellow Somerset player Pearllan Mary Cipriano in the final.
The title match was a rollercoaster ride that saw momentum shift between both players on multiple occasions. Lacey took the first set, narrowly winning it 5-3. Cipriano then struck back with a whirlwind set of tennis, taking the second set 4-0. The match then went into a deciding champions tie-break which, after some lengthy points, was won by Lacey 13-11.
The tournament was the 9th Annual Dorchester Open and organisers will no doubt already be planning next year’s competition which will mark the 10th anniversary of the event.
