Oliver Monteiro, Louis Skupien and Matthew Crofts were the stars of this year’s Yeovil Open after they reached the latter stages of the boys’ 12 & under and 14 & under draws.
In the 12 & under competition, Skupien was narrowly beaten in the final by Dorset’s Thomas Powell 7-6 (6), 6-4. Third seed Monteiro had earlier been beaten by Powell, the top seed, in the semi-finals 6-0, 6-0. Skupien reach the final thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over second seed Tim Rutherford from Cornwall.
Despite his one-sided defeat in the 12 & under semis, Monteiro came storming out of the blocks in the 14 & under draw. He raced through to the final, dropping just 10 games in three matches. He beat top seed Tristan Coore in the quarter-finals 6-4, 6-1 before registering a 6-2, 6-1 win over Skupien in the semis. Skupien had experienced a free run into the last four after receiving two walkovers in the first round and the quarter finals. Monteiro was up against fellow Somerset junior Crofts in the final and he was too strong for his opponent as he completed a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The 16 & under draw was won by Dorset’s George Morrissey after he came out on top from the round robin draw that also featured; Alex Taylor, Edmund Whelan, Tadhg Carter and Angus Fraser.
