“All round good egg” awarded honorary lifetime tennis membership

Monday, February 04, 2013

The recent Frome Selwood Tennis Club AGM was a celebration of not only great development in 2012 but of Rachel Blacklidge, a member whose support has been invaluable for over 35 years. Rachel joined the club, of only 15 or so members, over 35 years ago and soon became secretary in 1980 for a staggering 25 years.

Adrian Green, former club chairman, presented the award sharing stories of his day as chairman and how Rachel’s behind the scenes support not only maintained the club, but pushed it to develop and become so much. Her charm made everyone feel welcome and encouraged a social atmosphere. With only limited club funding, Rachel encouraged everyone to contribute on a voluntary basis to make events like award ceremonies and ratings tournaments possible,  through simple contributions of food or decorations that made all the difference. Her enthusiasm was unstoppable as she crossed international boarders creating links with Chateau Gontier in France and Murhardt in Germany . Annual exchanges continue to be enjoyed by members of all ages and abilities.

Over 35 years later, Rachel remains an invaluable member and trustee of Frome Selwood Tennis Club continuing to practice her excellent skills. Having played in teams for many years, she now enjoys a more relaxed game amongst friends. Her honorary membership is in recognition of her dedication to the club and setting an example for those who follow. Her efforts have made a significant contribution to this thriving club which now has a staggering 225 members both adults and children.
