The first open and veterans tennis tournament at Arfon Tennis Centre, Caernarfon, attracted a large entry from as far away as Devon, Cambridge, Cumbria and Lancashire.
“This was the first time we had hosted a winter competition in January and it turned out to be a real success,” said Ian Preston, Gwynedd Council’s tennis development coach.
“The standard of play was high, and we look forward to many of these players returning for our next adult competition in April.”
Among the competition highlights, Jonny Jones (Prestatyn) had three tough matches to reach the final where he beat Stephen Gilbert (Lancashire) 6-4 6-4.
The men’s 35s singles was won by Nick Walls from Cumbria, who beat local coach Ian Preston, while in the men’s 50s singles, Peter Williams (Colwyn Bay) beat Steve Cooke (Ruthin).
Sam Lees (Craig y Don) and Andy Baker (Prestatyn) beat Jonny Jones (Prestatyn) and Ian Preston (Caernarfon) to win the men’s doubles competition, while in the men’s 35s doubles Richard Godbold and Michael Slater (Wrexham) beat local players Alun Davies (Caernarfon) and Trystan Larson (Caernarfon).
In the ladies singles, Amarillo Molnar (Cambridge) beat Debbie King (Wrexham), while the doubles was won by Mary Wright (Bangor) Amarillo Molnar (Cambridge).
The veterans mixed winners were Ernest Dyson (Bangor) and Angela Battersby (Caernarfon) of Caernarfon.
“The success of open and veterans competitions such as this, shows how tennis is really a game for life,” said Peter Drew, chief executive of Tennis Wales.
“There are tennis clubs and centres all over Wales keen to welcome players of all ages and all abilities.”
