School students gather for Vale’s biggest touchtennis event

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Some 70 young players from across the Vale of Glamorgan took part in Wales’ biggest touchtennis event so far.

Competitors from Barry Comprehensive, Bryn Hafren, Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Stanwell and St Cyres joined others from host school St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School in Barry.

Two hours of round-robin competition led to a final between Barry Comprehensive and Stanwell. Some excellent rallies and competitive play eventually saw a narrow victory for Stanwell. The winners and runners-up received the prize of a new racket.

Simon Clarke of Tennis Wales said: “We’re really excited about encouraging more and more secondary school pupils to get involved in tennis and touchtennis using smaller courts, smaller rackets and sponge balls allow for all abilities to compete and enjoy the sport.

“This was a fantastic event, with both boys and girls playing against each other in the exciting and enjoyable environment that we want to promote. We’re very excited for the next event!’’

Organiser Ben Coates said: “Bringing all the schools together to compete in one afternoon at this up-and-coming sport was fantastic. Credit has to go to the players who all got into the spirit of the competition and played through the weather. Big thanks goes to the players, 5x60 officers and teachers who made the event possible.”
