British no.4 Tara Moore will be leading home hopes as the summer’s world-class tennis continues in Wrexham with the next round of the Aegon GB Pro-Series – and entry is totally free for spectators.
The 20-year-old bravely missed out on a place in the second round of The Championships, Wimbledon after taking Kaia Kanepi all the way, eventually losing out narrowly 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
As the third-highest ranked player in the draw, Moore will be hopeful that she can put in a good show at The North Wales Regional Tennis Centre for the tournament which runs from July 21st to the 27th.
Moore has had a marvellous year with three ITF tournament singles titles including a very impressive win in Arizona where she took the championship as an unseeded player – wins that have seen her rise 75 world ranking places to a career high 191.
Her biggest challenges will come from highest ranked Marta Sirotkina, who beat Moore last year in their only singles match, and 19-year-old Serbian Jovan Jaksic who has won five tournaments this year and rocketed up over 240 places from world no.420 during that time.
The championship has a rich history with Heather Watson the winner in 2010 and tournament director Sarah Wooding is looking forward to hosting the event.
She said: “I am looking forward to another great week of international tennis in Wrexham and we are all set for a great week of women’s tennis.
“Spectators are welcome, admission is free of charge and it is a great chance to see some of the best up and coming players compete at a local venue.
“The standard of tennis will be very high and this event has a history of winners going on to break into the top level, such as Heather Watson, who won in 2010.”
Qualifying takes place on 21st and 22nd July before the main draw starts on 23rd July. The doubles final will take place on Friday 26th July, with the singles final scheduled to start at 11am on Saturday 27th July.
