Former Welsh Doubles champion celebrates beating brain tumour by meeting her heroes from The Hunger Games

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

17-year-old brain tumour survivor Kelsey Barratt from Ystrad Mynach, near Caerphilly, was invited to meet her heroine Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet at the Hunger Games Mockingjay premiere.

Kelsey is a former South Wales tennis team player and also won the under 12s Welsh Double Championships.

After fighting her way back to fitness she is now playing for the ladies tennis team at Allt-yr-yn, Newport, and having recently achieved her Level 1 Coaching Course is working at Caerphilly Tennis Club.

Kelsey who has twice battled a brain tumour, met the Hollywood star and a host of other celebrities thanks to the charity Round Table Children's Wish. A national charity based in Bournemouth, Dorset, Round Table Children's Wish creates hand-crafted wishes for 4-17 year old children with life-threatening illnesses.

Kelsey travelled to London with her mother Kerri, where they were put up in a Leicester Square Hotel and got to walk down the red carpet at the Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 premiere.

Kelsey said: "When my mother told me that Round Table Children's Wish had arranged for us to go to the premiere of Mockingjay I didn’t quite know what to say - I was so excited and shocked that I actually had the chance to meet all my idols in one night."

She continued: "On the evening of the premiere we were taken to a special enclosure on the red carpet, where we waited until the stars arrived and came over to chat and have photos with us.

"I had photos taken with Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Sam Claflin from Mockingjay, and many other celebrities like Gary Lineker, the TOWIE stars, and the X-Factor contestants.

"The whole experience was emotional and I'll never forget it."

Kelsey was just 12 when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The terrible news came just months after the young South Wales tennis team player won the under 12s Welsh Double Championships.

Kelsey underwent surgery to remove the tumour but was told that a small piece of the growth remained in her brain and would be closely monitored.

For four years she had a brain scan every six months, but still managed to excel at tennis and attained 10 GCSEs with A and B grades.

Her mum Kerri said: "It was a very worrying and traumatic time for us, and then last August, after she had taken her GCSEs, Kelsey had to have a second operation, to try and remove the rest of the tumour."

She added: "Kelsey faced the operation so bravely and I was very proud of her.

"After she recovered she started playing tennis again, fought her way back to fitness and is now studying for her A Levels.

"She has such strength of character and attending the premiere was such a well deserved treat."

Kelsey has recovered well from surgery and is back playing tennis for the ladies tennis team at Allt-yr-yn, Newport, where she is a member.
